The city of Amida (1) consist of the old city inside the stone walls and the small fishing dock. A royal decree have recently also included two nearby villages and enclosed the area with a timber pallissade with stone foundation to further protect the populace. The colours of the city is the yellow and black flag which depict the triumph of the sun over darkness. The temple is also linked to the meaning of the city color's since it is dedicaced to the unconquered Sun. All minecraft players will know what is it about ;)
Underside Amida you will also find an extensive railway to the fortified desert city to the west, a fully functionnal sewer and rain water collection system and an extensive stone work to consolidate and fill the voids left by the mines. The latter is inspired from my own explorations of the Paris quarries and catacombes.
Linked to the city by a long arched stone bridge lies the royal fortress. It is still not fully provisioned and armed but is already featuring the throne room, a dinning room, a guard tower, a temple to Jupiter Best and Greatest, a central three story library, a temple to Selene. A beacon is shining at night through the library and the Selene temple's. There is also a secret tunnel going to an underground fortress...
The king colours is the white and blue flag.
Our aim is to build a city and it's surroundings with believable scales and structures. In order to do so we focus on realistics features. E.g. all houses have stone foudations, fortified walls extends to the rock underneath. Interior structures are supported by arched masonry or timber frames. Mines and quarries have also supporting structures.
Most style are inspired from late antiquity and early medieval architecture. Religion is polytheism with a preference to Roman naming conventions.
All work was done in survival mode, vanilla minecraft. When we upgraded to 1.6 we had to move our creations (mostly only the city) to a new world in order to enjoy the new biomes. This was done with MCEdit and it explain the near-perfect position of the king stronghold on a steep rock island. Moreover the big castle on the north was also integrated from another server. We also frenquently edit the map to cut explored but unused parts of the world in order to keep a reasonable file size.
(1) the name of the city was chosen as a tribute to the heroic fight put by the Gauls legions during the siege of Amida in 359 as related by Ammianus Marcellinus.
