Im sorry if I am annoying or bothering you in any way about greifers and misbehave-ers, but I have a huge hatred for greifers and would like to see them banned ASAP before they make an even bigger mess. :) -starscreamer13

Ok so I've been on the server for quite some time (have built a few things and started some projects) and so I think I could give you guys a little review on how I see the whole thing.

MANY OTHER ATTEMPTS

The idea to build a city in Minecraft is great. Although it's been here many times. I've seen people making plans on building Liberty City (GTA3 or 4), building futuristic skyscraper downtowns or old fashioned towns etc. But I've never so far encountered a project like that that was finished or even aspired to be completed one day. Most people canceled the projects because they were too huge. Then there are some large cities in Minecraft that are claimed huge enough and so finished, but they mostly lack detail. They are too generic, builds are copy-pasted, all the floors in tall houses are the same, either with the same furniture layout or with no furniture at all. The whole thing is boring.

ELCDRAGON'S TOWN: GOOD STUFF

Now elcdragon's town map is different. First of all, most builds are very detailed. That was the first thing that hit my eyes. You can go into houses, mansions, factories, warehouses, shops, train stations, stadiums and all that stuff, and you almost always hit fully furnitured interiors.
The city is huge and it still expands. I guess elc will keep expanding it until he just gets bored with it (will it ever happen?).
And lastly anyone can contribute. If you build nice stuff in the freebuild area, it might get imported into the city, and if you build more, you have a chance to become a builder so you can build right in the city.

ELCDRAGON'S TOWN: BAD STUFF

Now these are all nice features. But I can see a few flaws and disadvantages anyway. There's apparently no plan (not even vague one) how the city should look like. The architectural style is not uniform so many parts of the city look just weird: We have awesome looking modern house with perfect details everywhere right next to a quite poor wooden almost like a shack. Right, that may happen in the real world too but somehow here it feels just weird. This is of course a consequence of letting people build anything in freebuild and importing those builds. So the city often looks quite inconsistent.
The other problem with importing stuff from freebuild is that the creations are usually griefed and the process of importing unfortunatelly messes up a lot of details. Missing signs, item frames and items from item frames, paintings etc. Because elc and mamxan insist on being the only guys who can interact with the world outside freebuild and builder zones, most of the broken imported stuff remain broken. In fact, even if they had more people to do the job, it's sometimes impossible because only the original author of the build knows what is broken or missing. So actually this is unsolvable unless the world edit tool gets a better version. (Btw. even MC Edit messes up entities. Whyyy?! Otherwise it's such a great tool).

CARS: AN EVERLASTING PROBLEM IN MINECRAFT

Another point I have here are cars. A city needs them. You can build a simple sedan either 2 blocks high with carpets being the roof, or 3 blocks high with carpets as the roof. If 2 blocks high, then the height is more natural. No sedan is higher than you so this is the way to go. On the other hand it still feels weird cos like that there is no chassis which can be made of slabs which leads to the other 3 blocks high variant. This one is the one used in the city in like 80%. Both look weird. The first has ok dimensions but no chassis, the latter has chassis but totally wrong dimensions. Mojang! WE NEED SLABS and STAIRS of all materials! Everything would be just fine with wool blocks being halved. No problem with the scale.

ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS

Now about newcomers and their attempts to build in freebuild. I would recommend you to always check the SHOWCASE at spawn. It gives you the idea how to build basic stuff:
Houses with double walls and triple ceilings (ceiling of 1F, then gap then floor of 2F - all that because of a. possibility to have RS lights and b. different ceilings from floors).
Always do interiors. Build furniture.
Do planning. Don't just place blocks randomly. Think about materials carefully.
Make vehicles always only 3 blocks wide. Otherwise they won't fit the roads.
Don't build in medieval style. Elcdragon's town is modern.

CONCLUSION

All right, I think I said all I wanted to say.
Elcdragon's town map is a great project with many positive and also some negative points. I'm afraid the issue with inconsistency can't be fixed now. The city is already too huge. Other than that, keep it going guys.

Hope you didn't die reading this :)

I agree, this can be a problem, but for a second thought.... eh.. its fine. A big city with alot of detail is enough. :P i guess its fine. sorry about my mean coment

To the mods;

Recently I was on as server (creative) who had a problem like this, a freeuild area which was freqently griefed. But then they found a bukkit plugin that saved the freebuild area every hour as a schematic to use with worldedit. Then the area was also cleared of any builds. This may be a way to assure the regular guest that nothing gets lost.

A builder on your server.

hi,
i'll keep it short.
if you want a server with ranks, mods, and whatever you mentioned, you won't get it on our server.
running a server is time-consuming. the more features, the more time you need. the more time i have to spend running the server, the less i can play. and helpers/mods won't help, we've tried it.

if you're not happy how we used your building, stop building on our server. of course you can tell us about a gap in the wall or 4 signs in front of a door, but not about every single missing painting or item frame.

don't get me wrong, we appreciate all of your help, but it's my server, my rules.

this is the end of the discusion, not the start.
map comments should be about the map, not the server.

Hey, I'm enjoythefood! This is my first forum post. Anyways, I have been noticing that griefing occurs frequently to buildings that me and the community on the server have worked very hard to make. Most recently, my gas station/convenience store, furniture store, hot air balloon were all griefed! Luckily, I saw that in time to fix them. Numerous builds were wrecked. Thank god firespread is turned off! Anyways, I know that the admin have ways to handle this, and I know you're all really busy, but... can they maybe import builds more frequently? Not only would space be cleared up for new builds much faster, but griefing would have less time to happen. If you can't make this happen, that's ok, I know you have a lot to manage. But please consider it! I love this server and I hate to see griefing ruin our hard work!

What about rank like helper, to import builds? Find ppl that come on occationally and make em helper. Or integrate world edit with builder and make em just like mod rank where u get to ban griefers and rollback.

Guys, I'm a builder but I can only interact with stuff in builder regions. I'm not happy about that cause whenever I fly through the city, I can see imported stuff that got messed up in the process or was griefed before importing but the admin didn't repair it. Thus the city is broken here and there. It's frustrating seeing broken stuff and not being able to repair it :( Leaked showers all over floors, missing bits of all kinds of stuff, missing frames, chairs (=stairs) turned around so they no longer look like chairs, broken little details that matter, and so on. If it's too much work for the admins, I can at least help with eliminating these flaws...

I agree with this wonderful statement. I left the server yesturday with this... AMAZING HOUSE that me, star, and pyar did. Its majestic. Amazing. Then a griefer came... and its not that great. His edits were small, but deadly to me. Made a small PDF presentation on it. I agree with pyaroshi (pyar), that builders should have access to the whole world to correct all the mistakes griefer did and admin import them without notice
MY PDF: http://www.docdroid.net/file/view/bdmt/elcdragon-modern-house-griefed.pdf

Look at the roof of the mansion. Come on! A random balcony? LOOOOL it got imported...

Shouldn't I make a forums/website so ppl can share their creations on the server and also report greifers? And news and announcement to tell ppl the news? And for the front page, I can showcase the map and add interesting desc so ppl can dl it?

I just wanna help the server so bad, by making the website D: (im a nerd w/programming skillz for websites)
