Hey,

so I'm going to update my map soon and I am looking for ways to reduce file size. How about a quick guide on what files are essential and how to create the most efficient zip or rar while retaining the original save? I know most users are already pretty proficient at this but as the site grows with more noobs like me, it would be handy advice to have at handTongue

Removed all files ending .mcr. This had the effect of more than halving the file size, thanks for the tip! Really looking forward to overviewer update, sounds like it's coming together nicely, thanks for all the hard workSmile.

Was 190mbit now only 80mbit!

To do this find your save file (look in %appdata% in windows and application support on mac osx).
First; right click and copy file and then paste somewhere handy like the desktop.
Open this file and look in the region and dim-1 (region) folders, right click and arrange icons by type to help and simply delete all files ending .mcr.
Now compress with a something like winrar and upload your file!

(I'm sure you all could have figured this out easily, but I've typed it now. I can't untype it...)

I was monitoring the render process closely and this map:

http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/sj5N4

which has an archived rar of 1.8MB uncompresses to 125MB! I'm not sure what this person did but wow that's great compression.

Maybe just selecting maximum compression when creating the rar file?

i just guess: it's a plain world, all chunks are basically identical - perfect for compressing...
(so perhaps not the best map for monitoring Wink)

LOL. Well I wasn't specifically monitoring that map just monitoring the render process in general after the upgrade Smile
